What is a bonding agent?

Within construction, a bonding agent is a material that can be natural or synthetic, its purpose is to help join the individual parts of a structure whilst negating the use of any mechanical mechanisms.

An example of a bonding agent being used would be in an instance where you apply new concrete over old concrete. Without the bonding agent, these would be two separate pieces of concrete, with the bonding agent, it melds helps to join them together.

The result of this is having a more stable structure, with less of a chance of being disrupted.

Is a bonding agent the same as glue?

It has a similar purpose to glue, but is used in a completely different manner than your standard adhesive or arts and crafts type of glue.

What is a primer?

what is primer

A primer is a substance applied to surfaces prior to painting. It provides a coating for the surface being painted, and an appropriately smooth surface for the paint to attach to. Its name comes from the fact that you are getting the surface in its prime condition before painting it.

Primers come in three types, Oil, Shellac, and Latex. Each of these have their own pros and cons that you should research to see which works for you. That being said, these 3 effective in their own right, as long as you know how they pertain to your specific situation.

What happens if I don’t use a primer?

Not using a primer isn’t the end of the world, but it causes a lot more work to be done. Because an unprimed surface is uneven and porous, it means that you would have to apply multiple layers of paint to obtain an even finish. Which can be avoided if you use a primer.

Do I have to use agents and primers myself?

Agents and primers

Understandably, not everyone can physically use these products due to physical inability, time constraints etc. Though these products are required for the best possible paint job, you can seek to employ local tradesmen/decorators who specialise in this kind of work.

Although everyone’s services are different, generally you would cover the cost of the labour and materials, which in this case are the agents and primers.
